Question 2

Q2)
How does your media product represent particular social groups?

In our project we have two character, which are male and female. The male is hidden and we don't actually see their face and the one in power at this moment. He is in black clothes and looks scary. The woman is in white clothes and not in power. She looks like she is scared of the man. Theses representations are normal in the horror genre as there is mostly a damsel in distress. We have shown these representations by the way we have shot our opening sequence, how we have use props and body language with our actors for example there is a shot of the man and you can barely see them showing that you should fear him as you always fear what you can't see it is also a high angle shot so it is also showing his power over the women. For the woman we have a show of her looking vulnerable. We did this by making the actor have a closed body language and shown them bound to chairs.

Question 6

Q6)
What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product?

In our project I learnt many new skills and have improved on old skills in the making and editing of our film.

Some technologies we used were; Slide Rocket, Prezi and an Anamatic, these all helped us plan and research our production for our coursework. In our Anamatic we also found out how our film would look when we filmed and framed our film.

When actually editing our film we used technologies like Final Cut, Live Type and iMovie to put the film together, put titles on and put them together to make our film. We also used Macs where I improved on my knowledge on how the Mac works.

Question 3

Q3) what kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?

Our piece is a horror piece, named Roll The Dice with the film being about a psychopath playing a game, for people aged 16-24.
The company we chose to distribute our film was Lionsgate. This is a north American independent company, which means they have less money which our film, from the way it has been filmed, would be good for this. They also don't have specific target market so this would be good for us. They also take controversial subjects, which ours is, so that is also good for us.
Our production company name is circus entertainment, we chose this because some it is a scary, spooky and so is our opening sequence so it works well with our film in general.

Evaluation

Q1)
In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

For our coursework we had to make a two minute opening sequence for a chosen genre that we liked. To do this we had to research opening sequences and what goes into them. We found out that an opening sequence includes a production and distribution company, titles, close ups and gain clues. Logos are what are used for the production company and distribution company. It is what makes the audience recognise who they are. The titles are how you know who are involved with the production which is the cast and crew and also the production and distribution companies. Close ups are used to get some clues for what's going to be happening in the film, they are used a lot in horror films.

Our group decided on choosing horror as our genre for this project. The conventions of an opening sequence of a horror film are quick cuts to build tension for the audience and for them to ask questions about what's happening, close ups to make the audience also ask questions and low key lighting
Quick cuts are used in Saw in it opening sequence as you get the feeling of that the man has in the water, shock and being scared. It is also building tension as you want to see what happens to the man in the water.

You see close ups and low key lighting in Insidious as the film is a freaky film and you get the feeling of it being freaky with these conventions it also makes the audience ask questions again.

Our film used many conventions mentioned but we also challenged some for example we didn't use an establishing shot, which is  a typical convention, in ours as we didn't want to give a location, it was what one the questions the audience asked would be, we also did use quick cuts all the time we have some slow shots with a pan in them it was to make the audience feel a sense of being safe at the start but that is about to change as it goes into more quick cuts towards the end. Challenging the conventions makes audience ask more questions which is why I thought this was successful.

Roll The Dice Title Plan

Here is a shot of the shot for our film, 'Roll The Dice.' We used the red colour to show the feelings
that the characters will feel and the colour is also typical to a horror film because of blood and gore.
We downloaded our font off of 'DaFont,' it is called 'Blood Crow.'

We will also use this for our titles going on over the action. There will be a shot of punishments and for the title that says 'Punishments' we will use this font but have it black instead of red.

Here is an example of what we do for a title, we will have a shot going on underneath the titles. We will use the the same font and colour for the titles to make it flow. The placement of the titles will be in the lower left, the lower right and the upper right of the shots. The title in the sequence will fade in out of the each shot when they come in and out.

In terms of the order in which they come in it will follow the typical order of an opening sequence.

Storyboard for Opening Sequence

Sounds

For the soundtrack we thought we should use something similar to the Insidious theme tune but recreate it using copyright free websites. It will work well with our piece as it is a stereotypical theme for a horror film.

For sounds we will need to find a sound of a dice rolling this could easily be found on copyright free websites and then just put over the video. It will be a hyperbolic sound to make it seem more important.

We will also need to have a wind type sound for our opening sequence to add the sense of fear. We can also find these on copyright free websites or find a sound effect on iMovie.

This is a similar sound we will use but it will have but it is too strong of a windy it would need to be quieter and calmer.
